I was working on an interview a few days ago and one of the questions I had to answer was what jobs I’d held in the past. It got me thinking about some of the strange and wonderful occupations out there. Not that I’ve had a lot of jobs. I started out working as a telephonist in a telephone exchange. This was back in the olden days when calls were connected by the telephonist grabbing a cord and plugging it into the hole corresponding to the number asked for. Looking back now, it’s a good thing it was a small exchange out in western Queensland here in Australia. Many more subscribers and I wouldn’t have been able to find the right hole. Tough when you can’t find the right hole to fit something into, yes?
I’ve worked for the Army, driven 58 seater buses as part of my job as procurement and transport officer for an international boarding school, sold used cars, been a temp for an employment agency which involved going out to businesses that needed an office worker while someone else was on holidays, worked in a nursing home. But by far the funniest job was waitressing. Not that there’s anything funny about waitressing. It’s damned hard work. But at the time, I was working for the army and needed a second job because I was saving for a trip overseas. The restaurant was called Dirty Dick’s and had a medieval theme. All the female staff work long black skirts split clear up to the top of the thigh on one side. Fishnet stockings and high heels. White peasant blouse and one of those waist cinchers that pushed your boobs up until they almost spill out of the top of the blouse.
This night in particular I was carrying a large serving bowl of soup to the table and as I leaned over to place it on the table, the man on the end slid his hand into the slit in my skirt and groped me between the legs. Now remember I was only 18 at the time. Today, my reaction may well be different. lol Anyway to cut a long story short, I upended the bowl of soup on his head. Needless to say, my boss wasn’t happy and neither was the customer. The boss sacked me for not being friendly enough to the customers. I mean, come on! I might have been dressed as a serving wench but that didn’t mean I had to play the part to that degree. I was pissed as hell at the time, but I can laugh about it now. In retrospect, it was funny to see that guy sitting there with soup running down his face. Thank God it was a cold tomato soup. lol
So what about you? What’s the funniest or strangest job you’ve ever held?
